Parishes in Tanzania and Kenya
There are presently 9 parishes in Tanzania. Most are in very rural, remote areas, filled with faithful who are poor materially, but happy in great faith. In our urban parish of Arusha, we find ourselves still not in the best of places, as our parishes are in the slums. There are a lot of people, and all in a very poor community; according to Pope Francis, they are the faithful who live in the margins.
Confreres working in those rural areas have to struggle to live, and give distinct advocacy towards forming the youth. Many of them are young, but with no jobs they turn to prostitution, abuse, and above all a hard live lived in the slum areas.
Across the border in Nairobi, Kenya, we have two more parishes. In all, we meet the same challenges as the urban centers in Tanzania, as we are in the capital city’s Archdiocese.
May of the parishioners are migrants, and either work in agriculture or industrialization. Nonetheless, most will remain unemployed, and it’s our duty to give them hope.
